Gore Clump Update
Published: 04 February 2026
Update from Dorset Council, 4th February 2026
To complete our junction safety improvements at Gore Clump we plan to have three-way signals in place during February half term.
From Monday 16 February to Friday 20 February temporary traffic lights will be in use between 7.30am and 3.30pm to control traffic on the C13 Spread Eagle Hill and Boundary Road (southern arm).
Although this is not part of the formal diversion route for the current Dinah’s Hollow closure, we appreciate that some local drivers are using this as an alternative route.
These final works will complete the Gore Clump safety scheme and carrying them out during half term will help minimise disruption, as roads will be quieter.
We will look to reduce the traffic management wherever possible as the work progresses.
Update from Dorset Council Highways 12th January 2026
Improving Safety on the C13 at Gore Clump
Dorset Council have recently completed a safety scheme on the C13 at Gore Clump.
Gore Clump is just off the C13 between Blandford and Shaftesbury and is next to the Compton Abbas Airfield.
The location has two junctions- Boundary Road northern arm adjacent to the airfield and Boundary Road southern arm – both of which connect with the C13.
Gore Clump has previously been identified as an injury collision cluster site.
In June 2018 this stretch of roads speed limit was reduced from 60mph to 40mph.
However, comparing data before and after the speed limit reduction shows very little improvement.
Collision Data
Collisions between 7 June 2014 and 6 June 2018:
Collisions between 7 June 2018 and 6 June 2022:
Analysis of the collision data – including vehicles involved, direction of travel, vehicle movements, time of day and weather conditions – identified the junction layout as a contributory factor. Due to the sensitivity of the landscape, as well as its ecological significance, our engineers developed an unintrusive layout design while still achieving significant safety benefits for all highway users.
The safety scheme has combined vehicle movement restrictions with lining and signing improvements to include:
- one-way northern arm (no entry from Boundary Road)
- no right-turn into northern arm
- no right-turn from southern arm onto C13 for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes
- double white lines to reduce inappropriate overtaking
- ‘slows’ & rumbles to improve awareness of the junction
- Southern arm junction markings to ‘square up’ junction
- Boundary Road junction markings to reduce northern arm vehicle speeds; northern arm to give way and priority for southern arm
- speed gateways to emphasise 40mph speed limit
- review of existing road signs and introduction of new warning signs
- vegetation clearance to enhance visibility at southern arm

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT ORDER 10th November 2025
Update from Dorset Council 4th November 2025
Dear Stakeholder,
As you are aware, Dorset Council is planning improvements to the junction of Boundary Road and the C13, commonly referred to as ‘Gore Clump’.
Dorset Council is now taking the opportunity to resurface Boundary Road during construction of the Gore Clump Safety Scheme. Combining construction of these schemes will be more cost effective and less disruptive than delivering independently.
However, this change of scope has led to changes in the approach to traffic management during the construction period. To ensure the safety of both the public and the workforce during construction, Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs) and Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) measures will be implemented. These now include:
3-Way Temporary Traffic Lights at the junction. Only one arm of Boundary Road will be open at any time and both directions of the C13 will be under traffic light control throughout the works. Daytime Closures of Boundary Road from Monday 24 November to Friday 12 December. This closure will be weekdays only from 7.30am to 4.30pm - outside these dates/times a priority control system will be in place. Access to the airfield will be available from one end of Boundary Road at any given time, depending on the location of the works. Access will remain available for emergency services to ensure the safe operating of the airfield.
Night-time Closures (8pm to 6am) on Monday 15 December and Tuesday 16 December. During these closures, traffic will be diverted via the A350. Stop/Go traffic management will be in use during the day from Monday 15 December to Wednesday 17 December.
We understand that roadworks can be disruptive and we are committed to minimising inconvenience wherever possible. Advance Warning Signage will be installed two weeks prior to the start of construction to help drivers plan their journeys accordingly.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
24th September 2025
Dear Stakeholder,
As you are aware, Dorset Council is planning improvements to the junction of Boundary Road and the C13, commonly referred to as ‘Gore Clump’.
These proposed changes were subject to public consultation earlier this summer. Following that process, the necessary Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) have now been approved. Construction is scheduled to begin on 24 November 2025 with completion expected by 19 December 2025.
To ensure the safety of both the public and the workforce during construction, Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs) and Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) measures will be implemented. These will include:
- 3-Way Temporary Traffic Lights at the junction. Only one arm of Boundary Road will be open at any time and both directions of the C13 will be under traffic light control throughout the works.
- Daytime Closures of Boundary Road. One arm will remain open while the other is closed for works.
- Night-time Closures (8pm to 6am) on both the C13 and Boundary Road for approximately two nights. During these closures, traffic will be diverted via the A350.
We understand that roadworks can be disruptive and we are committed to minimising inconvenience wherever possible. Advance Warning Signage will be installed two weeks prior to the start of construction to help drivers plan their journeys accordingly.
Following this email, Dorset Council will issue the formal TTRO primary consultation. You will also receive a construction start notification approximately two weeks before works commence.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
